The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Son of God, and that we must believe in Him to receive both forgiveness for our sins and eternal life.
God is Perfect, Good, Just and Holy. As such, He cannot allow sin to go unpunished or without consequence. Because of God’s love for his creation, mankind, He sent His only son to the earth to bridge the gap between God and man that was created by sin.
If you believe that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life, He died for you on the cross (taking our place for God’s judgment), and that by the power of God the Father, He rose again to life on the 3rd day, then you are forgiven for all of your sins. You must then turn away from your life of sin (change your wrong ways) and turn towards God to follow HIm.
It’s not always easy, but pray and ask God to help you to follow Him. He will give you His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, to guide and direct you. He will also give you the strength and ability to follow Him if you are willing to choose Him and obey Him.
Then What? 3 Simple Steps to Start Following God:
Some new believers ask the question, “Then what?” I would suggest 3 simple steps to help you in your journey of following and walking with God:
- Start to read the Bible - and ask God to help you understand what you are reading. I would suggest the Gospel of John because it’s an easy read and will help you to begin to learn about Jesus.
- Find a Christian Church - that believes in the Bible (and does not add extra books to follow as God-inspired books). Introduce yourself and let someone know you recently became a believer and would like to learn more about what it means to be a Christian. If you’re not sure where to start, introduce yourself to the pastor. The pastor can provide you with some good starting points. Ask if the church has a Bible study or small group that you can join. Also, try to make friends who are Christian. It will help a lot by providing the support and encouragement you need to learn and grow spiritually.
- Practice Prayer - Prayer is simply talking to God. You can pray with friends if you have friends who are willing to pray with you. It is also important to practice praying when you are alone because it will help you develop a relationship with God. Be honest with God when you are praying. He already knows what’s in your heart, and He loves you, so don’t be afraid to be honest. After praying, spend a few moments (or a period of time) being quiet and listening (with your mind and heart). You may want to get a journal to write down your thoughts. Often times, God may help to clarify your thoughts, prayers, and decisions. Give Him an opportunity to speak, and you may be surprised at the outcome. (Note: Knowing the Bible, which is the written Word of God, will help you identify and discern which thoughts and ideas are from God, and which are not.)
